ethernet cable issues.

my internet kept dropping from 70mbps to 9mbps. i had to try a lot to get it fixed. here’s a quick guide that doesn’t waste your time.

official steps.

first. make sure you’ve tried the official steps. this is the official microsoft help link.

you can also turn of your router for about a minute, then turn it on. this will reset it.

multiple ports.

if you’re like me you’ve multiple internet ports. which means plugging the ethernet plug in another might help.

reset.

in the end the fix here was easy. go to settings. then to network and internet. then click “reset network”. this threw away the 4 ethernet cables it had stored, as well as the 20 wifi addresses. but it completely fixed the speed issues.

additional troubleshooting recommendations:

  • if you have trouble only with certain websites you can try a different DNS (domain name system) list.
  • VPN. if you use a VPN you will get worst internet speeds, no matter what the seller will claim.
  • some schools and companies will block certain websites. install a VPN at home, then turn it on at your school or university.
  • check for any server or provider outages. for example on: downdetector
  • check with which server speedtesters will connect. when i used Ookla it would connect with a different server depending on if i had high or low speeds. even when the system told me i used the same ethernet connection.
  • sometimes your plug or cable just breaks after long use, ethernet cable heads are problematic, plugging the cable into a ethernet to USB C might prevent it from slipping out easily.
  • ask if anyone else in the building is torrenting/seeding, downloading, streaming or video calling.
  • try troubleshooting trough your PC’s manufacturers software. for example Lenovo has a program that includes troubleshooting tips and tech support. MSI has as well.
  • restart your PC, sorry i know. it works too often to not include it.
  • update your drivers, if you have unsupported drivers uninstalling them might help too.

still no fix?

try searching your hardware, like the name of your routers, laptop, PC, etc. try searching in different languages. if all else fails, try posting on reddit, steam or other forums. even some games have a tech support sub forum.
