redbubble for artists. tips and what the expect.
Redbubble artist review. What to expect. And tips and tricks, a short guide.
1, what sells. (And what doesn’t)
The best selling products are those that are easily found.
For example:
- Niche.
- Popular tag
- IP.
Niches might sell well if your art fits well with that category of people.
Some of my best selling artworks are artworks that are linked to a certain group of people.
This can be hobbies, like fishing, swimming, ect.
Or groups, ethnic, religious, ect.
tags.
Popular general tags might work as well.
Like colors, products, or other things, objects or features.
It’s a little harder to gain sales this way. Because there is way more competition.
But in general it’s recommended to add tags to your work. Popular tag generator websites might hell a LOT but you will always need to edit your tags.
For example: https://www.mykeyworder.com which has a great generator. But it will also generate tags like “vector” which are completely useless on Redbubble.
IP’s
Redbubble has partnerships with various IP’s. it’s a lot easier to gain sales this way. But your designs have to be approved first. Which is pretty easy if you’re playing it save and follow the guidelines. But nevertheless. Be careful. And always check the guidelines.
Sometimes IP’s get removed. Which will not remove your work. But you won’t be able to submit more works for that IP. this has to do with licensing contracts expiring.
You can also use IP’s that you do not own. Like to make fanart.
Fanart is illegal to sell officially so be careful. Don’t add for example a series title as name, and if it gets found by the license holder it will certainly get removed!
It’s especially not a smart idea to fill your whole portfolio with this kind of work. As too many wrongs might lead to a ban. This will not happen soon if you get a work removed once in a while. I have had about 5 works removed and haven’t got any additional action taken against me.
What to expect of redbubble income.
Don’t expect to make 100’s of dollars/euro’s of income.
I have about 30 to 40 € a month as income when I submit multiple (small) works a day.
It is possible to make more with smart management. Especially if you’re smart with what you make and follow the above rules. But for your sanity as an artist i don’t recommend trying to follow them 100% of the time.. As it means no general original work.
When is redbubble for you.
If you make a lot of digital art and you want extra income.
If you are currently home or studying and you want a reason to keep creating.
When is it not for you.
If you expect a full income to live from.
